This programme is delivered using blended learning, which is a flexible way of completing the course that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods and virtual classroom sessions.
The programme is delivered over 6 months and will include 3 full-day in-person sessions in RCPI Dublin and 9 Half day virtual classroom sessions.
All in-person sessions will be held in RCPI, No. 6 Kildare Street.

We will help you understand and manage the wide range of responsibilities that you will be expected to juggle in your new role, providing guidance and clarity on areas such as quality and patient safety, managing teams and budgets, and training the next generation of clinical leaders.
What you will learn
We will help you understand and manage the wide range of responsibilities that you will be expected to juggle in your new role, providing guidance and clarity on areas such as quality and patient safety, managing teams and budgets, and training the next generation of clinical leaders.
You will develop an understanding of how to manage complex, nuanced issues such as
have a systematic understanding of concepts related to leadership in a clinical setting
demonstrate understanding how to manage the tension between service and leadership
demonstrate critical awareness of the difference between leadership and management
work with colleagues across multiple departments and interact with other professionals
manage the appraisal process, provide accurate and constructive feedback, and drive further professional development
design and develop a business case
develop trusting and mutually respectful relationships with management
negotiate the delicate balance between clinical judgement, resource constraints and personal loyalties
achieve outcome for their patients at the forefront of care provision

manage conflict and respond to clinical incidents
Is this course for me?
This programme is designed for recently appointed consultants or those who wish to apply for consultant roles.
This course will start in January 2025, and the programme will run until June 2025.
Assessment
Each stand-alone block is assessed using the principles of formative assessment framework. Assessment methods include Individual reflections (300-400 words) to be submitted throughout the programme, you are also required to work in small groups on a project that applies the theories and methods learnt on the course. The project could be one that improves the quality of care or of one that is a service development to improve clinical outcomes.
